Green Juice for Kids Recipe (video)

I posted a picture of my 3 year old son drinking a green juice and I got a lot of questions from other parents who can’t get their kids to eat any vegetables.  To make things easy I made a video of how to make the juice yourself (below).     Here is the recipe I use in the video:

  • About 10 leaves of kale
  • 3 carrots
  • 3 celery stalks
  • 1 tomato
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 2 apples (usually use 1)

I ended up not using the spinach but you can add any combination of green vegetables… spinach, lettuce, chard, mustard or collard greens (a little rough… may not be appetizing for your kid).

Forgot to mention… take the seeds out of the apple before you juice it.

To get the most out of this green juice please use organic produce.

Dr. Dave Talks With The Life Regenerator

They call it being in “practice” for a reason.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Dan McDonald, aka Dan the Man, aka The Life Regenerator.  I have been a loyal follower of Dan the Man’s YouTube channel for quite some time.  Dan is a raw food and natural health guru.  Very modest, he will be the first to admit that he has a lot to learn, though he holds a wealth of information that could literally save the lives of millions upon millions of people… the idea that the food you eat, if done properly, can heal you.  Dan touts an organic raw food diet.   I encourage you to check out his YouTube channel with, I believe, close to 1000 videos… seemingly endless amounts of free information that can transform your life.

I reached out to Dan because, as some of you know, my 3 year old son James has been having severe, constant sinus congestion for close to 6 months now.  It has been particularly frustrating for me because, as a health care practitioner I help people resolve strange health issues every day in my office but nothing I have tried thus far had much of an effect for my son.

As a note… this seems to be how I came to be in the natural health profession.  I won’t go into extended detail but it seems that my personal health challenges have played a significant role in my pursuing chiropractic, then nutrition.  Perhaps raw food and detox is the next major introduction into my personal life and possibly practice?

As for my son, James… I am well aware that congestion is due, most often to a back up of the body’s natural detox systems… mainly the liver, gallbladder, and lymph system.  I have been adjusting him on a regular basis to make sure his nervous system is intact and able to coordinate the healing that must occur.  I have been diligent about giving him whole food supplements that will help support the function of his liver and help detox his system.  These efforts have helped him somewhat… let’s say about 50%.  But despite all our efforts he has been unable to kick it completely.

My family is a natural-first, medicine-last family… meaning we use medical treatments as a last resort rather than a first resort. I know that a visit to the medical doctor will result in a prescription for antibiotics and a nose steroid spray.  If these things have any effect it will only be temporary since they are only masking symptoms rather than addressing the underlying cause.  These medications are also damaging to his body.  So… I decided to reach out to Dan the Man and I sent him an email.  To my surprise I got a call later that day.  When I picked up the phone it went something like this:

Me: “This is Dr. Ritchie”

Dan: “David?”

Me: “Yes?”

Dan: “Dan the Man.”

All done in classic Dan the Man fashion.  Dan made a video of our conversation and I am posting it below.  I am putting this up here for a few reasons.  First of all, it is a wealth of valuable information that many, many parents (I’m certain) can use for their kids and for themselves.  Also, I want you… my viewers and my practice members to know that I take health… your health, your family’s health… very, very seriously.  I am constantly educating myself to learn more.  I am constantly challenging what I believe to be true.  I am constantly trying to better my approach to helping you put health back into your body.  And when I need to… I ask for help.

I am very grateful to Dan McDonald for his help.  He has helped me open my eyes to the true power of adding raw foods to the diet.  My wife and I have started my son on his raw food detox and it looks like we are all going along for the ride as well including my 1 year old son, Owen.  I’ll update on this in a few weeks and let you know how it went.

I wanted to give you a little insight into how someone dedicated to natural health deals with health problems in his family. I am constantly reading, listening, watching… educating myself to learn more about health and how I can not only help myself and my family, but also how I can incorporate new things into my practice to help you. I hope you enjoyed this blog. I encourage you, again to check out Dan McDonald’s youtube channel (liferegenerator).

By the way…the first 20 minutes is our conversation… well worth the watch… and the last 10 minutes is Dan letting innate flow… stream of consciousness thought the likes of which I have not seen in any of his other videos.  Am honored to be a part of this moment… some are calling his best video yet.

Enjoy and be healthy

Pain: What You Don’t Know Will Hurt You

It’s no big deal.  It doesn’t hurt that much.  If it gets too bad I’ll just take some Advil and it goes away.  It feels better if I take a hot shower.  Maybe It’s from sleeping wrong.  Maybe it’s my pillow.

I’ve heard them all.

First of all, let’s get this out of the way… if you have pain, something is wrong.  Pain is not normal.  Contrary to popular belief, pain is NOT something that people “just get.”  Pain is not something that is normal as you get older.  Pain is NOT something you have to just live with.  Pain is a warning signal from your body that something is wrong and you better do something about it or it’s going to get worse.

Sure, you can take an Advil and the pain will go away.  But what exactly does an Advil do?  Advil and other pain medications just mask the symptoms and do nothing to address the underlying cause of the problem.  So… you can take Advil every day of your life for the next 10 years and forget that you have pain but meanwhile there is a problem with your body, festering and worsening as time goes on.  And the longer it festers the worse it will get and the worse it gets the more irreparable it becomes.

I have talked with people who tell me they have neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain or any type of pain.  They tell me it’s been around for years.  They give me all the excuses as to why they are not getting it cared for… they take pills, it comes and goes, they have an old bed.  Nonsense.  There is a problem and if you don’t get it taken care of it will get worse and there comes a point when chiropractic is no longer an option.

If I had a dime for every time someone came to me and said, “I should have come to you first” I would have… well… I would have a couple dollars.  Give me another 10 years in practice and ask me again.  But it does happen… that’s my point.  People opt for dangerous spinal surgery… with a whopping 50% success rate… rather than give chiropractic a shot.  Chiropractic is safe and effective and millions upon millions of people use it on a regular basis to not only keep out of pain but to keep themselves and their families healthy.

Why wait any longer?  You have pain.  Do you ignore the Check Engine Light in your car?  No.  So why are you ignoring the ‘Check Engine Light on your body?  Do you value your car more than your body?  There is no better time than now to start on your path back to health.

Fast Food: Felony to Misdemeanor

What is worse than shoving a Big Mac, large fries and supersized Coke into your pie hole?  I can think of a few things… but let’s just state the obvious… fast food is garbage.  We all know that… but walk into any fast food joint and what do you see?  People.  Lots of them.  Why?  Because fast food is 1) fast, 2) cheap, 3) convenient and 4) tastes good!  That’s why.  And I would guess that most of you reading this article have been to at least one fast food restaurant within the past week, if not earlier today.

Well, I’m going to teach you one simple, quick way to turn your fast food felony into a misdemeanor.  Most of you know that I have a beef with sugar.  I blame sugar for a lot of things including obesity and a contributor to many diseases.  Sugar has no place in the human body yet it finds its way into almost every fast food meal by way of the soda.    A regular 12 oz can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar in it.  This is an entire meal’s worth of carbohydrates for an adult male… and they are nutritionless, high glycemic, empty calorie carbohydrates.  Nothing of value.

Keep in mind, that’s a 12 oz can of Coke.  But what do most of us do at McDonalds?  Either get the supersized Coke or get the endless refill.  If you drink a liter of Coke with your meal you are getting 108 grams of sugar.  This is almost a whole day’s worth of carbohydrates for an adult male… again… all junk carbs with no nutritional value.  Is it any wonder people are ballooning up like they just got stung by a thousand bees?!

So here it is… repeat offender.  Ditch the Coke.  Ditch the soda.  Get your Big Mac.  Enjoy it.  Love it.  Get your fries.  But ditch the Coke.  Instead… get a bottle of water.  Can you imagine how good you will feel about yourself when you order a bottle of water at McDonalds?

Now… you have a burger, some fries and a bottle of water.  Not the greatest meal in the world… but certainly not the worst either.  This is a better option.   Some of you have heard me give my Better Option speech at my workshops.  Ditching the Coke for water is a better option and you can pat yourself on the back for making that decision.  Imagine… if you gave up the soda every day… how much of an impact that would have on your life.  What would you do with all that extra health?

You Won’t Believe What Our Patients Are Saying

We’ve had some great successes in the office recently.  These are just a handful of testimonials patients have handed in recently.  All are featured on the front page of our website.  If you are a current patient and want to share your story… please do!

“My back was always really sore and tight and I had this slightly protruding hump at the base of my neck that was always sore. Now… I stand up taller. The pain in my back and neck is almost nonexistant. That hump on my back? Almost gone now! Thanks Dr. Ritchie!” – Jordan G.

“My son had very serious constipation and belly pain even with medication and a healthy diet. Without medication he would go to the bathroom once a week at most and with medication every 2 to 3 days at most. Now… he goes every day without any medication and there is no more belly pain and no more constipation.” – Carine D.

“I had pain every day. I did not sleep from the pain. It was constant and I never thought it would go away. I was on pain killers and muscle relaxers and those didn’t work all the time. The pain was so bad that I would cry at times. Now… I feel like my life has changed. I haven’t even taken Tylenol since starting to see Dr. Ritchie. I sleep comfortably and wake up pain free. I didn’t believe in chiropractors, but now I do. Thank you Dr. Ritchie.” – Gina Y.

“I would have serious sharp pain from stepping on uneven terrain in my mid-spine. It was almost like getting a severe shock of electricity. I noticed improvement after just a few visits and now I can hike pain-free. Also the range of motion in my neck has improved considerably. Now I see Dr. Ritchie once a month. I always feel welcome and comfortable. And this is coming from someone who hates going to see the doctor, dentist or even getting my hair cut.” – Doug T.

“The first problem I had was sharp, radiating pain in my lower back. I needed ibuprofen morning and evening. I tried physical therapy, hot tubs, ice, stretching but nothing really helped. I also had neck pain and headaches and could not turn my head very far. Now… my back and neck are the best they’ve felt in years. No more pain medication, no shooting pain down into my legs. I’m back to running as much as I like. My pain level now is a 0. I have recommended Dr. Ritchie to my friends and coworkers with similar results to those I have experienced.” – Ray N.

“I had a pain in the neck and sometimes I could not move my head over my shoulders. Now I can move my head like a child, turn it on my shoulder, read in many positions and best of all no pain.” – Set C.

“Before I came to see Dr. Ritchie I had really bad back pain, also my shoulder was bothering me. I couldn’t do many simple things I used to do like even walking without having constant pain. Now… the pain is barely bothering me. I can sleep and walk without pain.” – Cecilia C.

What Patients Are Saying…

“To be honest as time passed I didn’t really notice anything.  Then one day, it just dawned on me that I didn’t have any pain anymore.” - Tom B.

Save The Children

Have you heard of this show called Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution?  Jamie Oliver is a chef and had a show called ‘The Naked Chef’ not because he was sporting his birthday suit during filming, but rather because he stripped food down to its bare essentials to show people that it was easy to cook and prepare healthy meals for yourself and your family.  Food Revolution is about Jamie trying to get into public schools to find out what the kids are eating and how to make it healthier.  Would you be surprised to find out the schools are very resistant to this?  Well… in a society where kids have free access to soda machines and even Burger King food (in some school districts) its no wonder school officials wouldn’t want a TV camera in there.  It’s no secret that our youngest generations are having record setting health problems… be it weight issues, degenerative diseases, emotional or mental illnesses, etc.  Well… the solution starts at home… monitoring the foods our kids are eating.  In pursuit of our ‘Save the Children’ theme, this week’s Public Education Workshop is part of my Healthy Kids Series and it’s all about weight loss.  Simple tricks and simple foods to start knocking off the pounds and putting health back in our kids’ bodies.  Older kids and young adults are encouraged to attend with parents.  I hope to see you there.

Is Your Daily Vitamin Working For Or Against You?

Most people know that it’s a good idea to supplement your diet, with at the very minimum, a daily multivitamin.  Though, most people are not aware that all multivitamins are not created equal.  Recent research and a recent article in Reader’s Digest reviewing the research blew the door open on the vitamin industry.  Most vitamins do little or nothing for you… at best… and at worst actually do damage to your body.

Synthetic

Most of the vitamins you pick up in the store are synthetic… meaning they were created in a test tube.  So what?  Well… let’s take vitamin C for instance.  The vitamin C in your multivitamin is not vitamin C at all… it’s ascorbic acid.  In-fact… if you look at the ingredients on your multivitamin usually it looks like this:

VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID)

Ascorbic acid is NOT vitamin C.  It is a part of the ‘vitamin C complex’ but is not the complete vitamin.  Ingesting large doses of ascorbic acid can actually create a Vitamin C deficiency in your body… thus doing no good and instead doing harm.

Fillers

Another criticism of store-bought, synthetic vitamins are the fillers used to bind these chemicals together.  Many are toxic and have been shown to be harmful to the body.

Whole Food Supplements

What is the solution?  A high quality, whole food supplement is the answer.  Obviously real food contains vitamins and minerals that the body needs to survive and thrive.  Though what you might not know is this… food also contains all the cofactors and enzymes the body needs to actually USE the vitamins in the food.  Without these cofactors and enzymes the vitamin is useless… the body cannot use it.

When you take a synthetic vitamin it is completely void of all of these extras and the body is taxed to try to process the vitamins.  If you take a high quality whole food supplement all of these extras are included… because the vitamins and minerals come in the whole food form containing all the parts your body needs to process and use it.

Catalyn

In my office I use many high quality whole food supplements created from seed to supplement by a company called Standard Process.  The Standard Process daily supplement is called Catalyn… pictured here.

catalyn_bottle.jpg

So what’s the difference.  Here is a list of the vitamins and minerals found in a normal daily multivitamin (and remember these are synthetic and lacking the extra good stuff)

multivitamin.jpg

Catalyn contains whole food, natural ingredients only.  Here is a list of the ingredients found in Catalyn.

catalyn ingredients.jpg

Now… just looking at ONE of these 15 ingredients, carrot root… here is a list of all of the known nutrients and phytonutrients found in JUST carrot root alone:

carrot root.jpg

Does your daily multivitamin provide this level of nutrition for you?  My guess is no.

Why Supplement?

More and more people are becoming aware of the necessity to supplement the diet.  Many of us have diets high in processed foods which contain no nutritional value whatsoever.  Even those of us who are diligent about eating well are eating food grown in soils that have been over-farmed and undernourished for decades.   The fruits and vegetables we eat today have a fraction of the nutritional value of the same produce 20 or 30 years ago.

How Do I Get Some?

Catalyn is only sold through licensed health care practitioners.  If you are local to Walnut Creek and surrounding area here is a way you can get a free bottle of Catalyn.

I have put a question on my Facebook page.   The question is as follows:

On September 18, 1895 the first chiropractic adjustment was given by Daniel David Palmer to a janitor named Harvey Lillard.  What happened immediately after receiving this chiropractic adjustment?

a) Harvey Lillard said thanks, paid his $20 copay and was on his way!

b) Harvey never had a headache again.  He was so thankful he went on to become a professor at the first Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa.

c) Harvey’s hearing was restored and he proclaimed, “The horses!  I can hear the horses on the street!”

d) Harvey stood up and proceeded to grace all those in attendance with his rendition of ‘Funkytown’

CLICK HERE to go to my Facebook page.

You will have to click the LIKE button.  You will see the question on my wall.  Answer the question.

The first 25 people to answer the question CORRECTLY will receive a free bottle of Catalyn (for pickup only at my office).  Once you answer the question, call the office and schedule your pick-up! (925) 482-0195.

Your Vitamins Are Not Holistic

It is not uncommon for people to come in to my practice for nutritional counseling with a bag, or even bags of vitamins they take on a daily basis. People think that if they load their bodies up with lots of vitamins that they will be super healthy. This isn’t the case.

Taking endless vitamins every day is the end result of having little understanding of what and why you are supplementing your diet. Rather than having a laser-focussed system for determining what supplements are required by your body, most people just guess what they need and take it on a daily basis with crossed-fingers hoping that it is doing them some good. This is a system set up for failure. It is only a matter of time before people lose interest in their guesswork program, get tired of taking pills and stop altogether.

There is no doubt that supplementing the diet is a hot topic. Most of us are aware that we need to supplement our diets for one reason or another. Though most of us have no idea how to do it or what supplements we need. What is the solution?

Medications vs. Vitamins vs. Supplements

The first step is to gain an understanding of what a diet supplement is. First let’s talk about medications. Medications are chemicals, designed by chemists, in a test tube derived for the purpose of altering a chemical process in the body. Medications bypass the body’s normal physiologic processes and force a change… for better or worse. All medications have side-effects. Every chemical in the human body is associated with many chemical processes (not just the one the medication is intended to alter). When one chemical or chemical process is altered, it can literally change hundreds, if not thousands of other processes within the body… the end result… side-effects. Side-effects are often very harmful if not deadly.

Vitamins

This is where things get fuzzy. Many people visit the ‘health food’ store and pick up their vitamins thinking they are doing themselves good. I read last week in reader’s digest that I may need D3 so I’ll pick up some of that. I read that B vitamins are important so I’m going to get a B-complex. My doctor says my iron levels are low so I’m going to get something to fix that. I don’t sleep well so I’m going to pick up some serotonin. Ginseng is the rage so I’ll get some of that to boost my energy. And finally, I get frequent colds and I heard vitamin C is good for that.

Pretty soon you have a cupboard full of vitamin bottles. You are choking down dozens of pills every day. You are not sure if they are what you need… just guessing based on what you’ve read. And most often you don’t even notice a change in how you feel and any health issues you have are still there and are not going away.

Well… here’s where I destroy your natural health paradigm. Vitamins… more properly called nutraceuticals are NOT dietary supplements. When you take a vitamin to increase your levels of D3, or C or serotonin… you are practicing medicine. You are attempting to bypass the body’s normal physiologic processes to increase or decrease a chemical level to produce a result… you are treating symptoms. This is the practice of medicine. Nutraceuticals are NOT dietary supplements… they are medications. They are SAFER medications… though they are still medications. And when you take them for these reasons you are self diagnosing and self prescribing medication to alter the function of your body based on what YOU think is best… not based on what YOUR BODY thinks is best. Who do you think knows better?

Supplements

In my practice I use organic whole food supplements. Whole food supplements are made of food… and nothing more. These whole food supplements are designed to provide the nutrition your body is lacking to allow your body to function normally the way IT WANTS TO. These supplements do NOT bypass the normal physiologic processes of the body. They give nutrition to the body to function properly… the way it dictates.

Example: You have chronic colds and flu. The medical doctor treats the symptoms with medication and ignores the underlying cause. The self-diagnosing vitamin-taker buys Vitamin C, some Zinc and maybe some Vitamin A to force levels of these chemicals to increase within the body and hope for a stronger immune system… regardless of whether or not the body was deficient in these chemicals to begin with. Using supplements and Nutrition Response Testing (discussed soon), we determine there is dysfunction in the liver preventing your body from detoxing toxins properly so we provide the nutritional support your liver needs to restore normal function… thus naturally allowing your immune system to function properly and prevent colds and flus. This is just an example but it illustrates the difference between treating symptoms and the better alternative of addressing the underlying cause of the problem… and using the body’s own natural processes to correct the problem.

Nutrition Response Testing

I use a system of analysis called Nutrition Response Testing. This is a system that allows your body to reveal where the underlying problems are (liver, kidney, heart, etc), what is the underlying problem (environmental chemicals, heavy metals, food sensitivities, etc), and what supplements YOUR BODY WANTS to provide the nutritional support it needs to naturally correct the problem.

This system is a laser-focussed process for determining exactly what supplements you need rather than guessing and filling up your cupboards with half-empty vitamin bottles. Furthermore, these supplements are not meant to be taken for the rest of your life. They serve a purpose. And once the body corrects, not only will you notice the change in your health but you won’t have to take the supplement any more.

In my years of practice I have never seen nearly the amount of success I’ve had since I’ve introduced Nutrition Response Testing. The fact is most of us are starving for nutrition. We live on processed foods and the little real food we do eat has been poisoned with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, hormones and antibiotics… and of course genetically modified. Even people with the healthiest diets, of organic produce and proteins, typically require some dietary supplements to restore proper function to the body. The fact is we live in a time where dietary supplements are a necessity for proper function. Nutrition Response Testing is the answer.

Eating To Lose Weight

The Big Idea

First you need to understand how fat is stored on the body. When you eat sugars, the sugar is absorbed into the blood. Sugar in the blood is toxic. So your body recognizes this and releases insulin. Insulin is a hormone whose only purpose is to facilitate the removal of sugar from the blood AND TO STORE IT AS FAT. This is how fat is stored on the body. The more insulin released, the more fat you store and the fatter you get.

It is important to understand that eating fat DOES NOT make you fat. In-fact eating fat does two things to help you lose fat:

  1. Eating fat slows the absorption of sugar into the blood stream, reducing the amount of insulin released, thus reducing the amount of fat stored on the body.
  2. Your body CANNOT even initiate the biochemical process to burn fat unless there is fat present in the digestive system. Meaning… if you want to burn fat… you have to eat fat. Without it your body will choose to burn muscle tissue instead. Not good.

In order to burn fat from the body we need to reduce or eliminate insulin spikes which means we need to control the absorption of sugar into the blood stream. We do this entirely through diet.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are sugars.  Not just candy, cakes and cookies but any type of sugar such as fruit, grains and even vegetables.  Any time you eat a carbohydrate it is broken down into a sugar and absorbed into the blood.  The trick is we need to eat the right kind of sugars that reduce or eliminate sugar spikes.  The good kind of sugars are called ‘low glycemic’ sugars.  If you Google ‘glycemic index’ you will find a ton of resources to find the glycemic index of your favorite foods.  The higher the glycemic index number the worse the sugar is for you… meaning it is absorbed quickly into the blood, causing an insulin spike and making you fat.

I’ll make it simple though… the best carbs are green vegetables followed by any other color vegetable. Fruits and grains are somewhat high. Breads are terrible. And candy, cakes, cookies, etc are the worst. And the worst of the worst is a rice cake… the once touted diet food. Rice cakes almost dissolve in air… imagine what happens when you submerge them in stomach acids. Don’t eat them.

Choose your carbs wisely. This is one of the keys to burning fat off your body.

Protein

Eat protein. Protein comes in a few forms: animal meat, fish, tofu and it is also found in smaller quantities in beans, and dairy products. Choose high quality lean proteins.

When you eat protein your body releases a hormone called Glucagon. Glucagon is the antagonist to insulin. Glucagon will help reduce insulin spikes and prevent fat storage. That’s a good thing. Eating protein is one of your power tools in helping to control blood sugar and insulin spikes and fat storage.

Fat

I’ve already said it… eating fat doesn’t make you fat. Read my blog here:http://cafechiropractorwalnutcreek.com/blog/b_4780_fat_doesnt_make_you_fat.html

You should eat a small amount of saturated fat every single day… found in animal meats and butter. Saturated fat has essential nutrients you can’t find in any other food. You must eat it on a small scale. The rest, and bulk of your fat should be mono or polyunsaturated fats: olive oil, olives, avocados, nuts.

Drugs

Food is a drug. It is the most powerful drug on the planet… literally (a topic for another blog). You can either take a good drug or a bad drug every time you sit down and eat. It can either be a drug that works for or against you. Your choice.

If you balance your meal properly you will put your body into a fat burning mode… where your body uses fat for energy rather than sugar or worse even… muscle tissue.

Here’s how you do it…

The Plan

You need to eat ‘blocks’ of food. A block of food is defined as this:

7 grams of protein

9 grams of carbohydrate

3 grams of fat

A block of food is a perfectly balanced drug. When you eat a block of food you will prevent insulin spikes and put your body into a fat burning mode.

Smaller people will eat 3 block meals, while average size people will eat 4 block meals and larger people (not fat… just tall) will eat one or two 4 block meals and a 5 block meal. Everyone should also have two 1 block snacks every day. Here is what an average day for an average person would look like:

breakfast: 3 block meal

lunch: 4 block meal

snack: 1 block meal

dinner: 4 block meal

snack: 1 block meal

What does a regular meal look like? A piece of protein the size of the palm of your hand is about right. A handful of nuts, or some avocado or a couple tablespoons of olive oil on a salad. Your plate should mostly be filled with green vegetables. If you like grains keep it to brown or wild rice and quinoa.

Burn Fat While You Sleep

As I said before, when you eat a perfectly balanced meal you are putting your body into a fat burning mode for the next 3 to 4 hours. So… you should eat a 1 block snack right before bed. This puts your body into fat burning mode and you will literally burn fat while you sleep.

Fine Tuning

Everybody processes carbohydrates differently. Skinny people most likely have an easier time processing carbs than people who are overweight. Here’s how to tell.

If you eat a perfectly balanced meal and get hungry within the first hour after eating then you either ate too many carbohydrates or ate high glycemic carbohydrates. Adjust for the next meal.

If you eat a perfectly balanced meal and get hungry between 2 to 3 hours later then you didn’t eat enough carbohydrates. Adjust for the next meal.

What to Expect

The first two weeks are the most difficult. You are getting used to eating this way. If you eat properly you will not get hungry. In-fact it will most likely be more food than what you are used to eating. After two weeks your body will switch into a fat burning machine. That’s not to say you are going to lose 10 pounds in a week. Your body will naturally burn off excess fat at a safe and natural rate… about a pound a week.

More information about this eating plan can be found in the book Enter the Zone by Barry Sears. Read the first 10 chapters. The rest is for geeks. If you are a geek then knock yourself out. But the first 10 chapters are essential.

Sex and The Nervous System

Wha wha whaaat!? You heard me. I assign a lot of homework to my patients throughout their care. Stretching. Ice and heat. Massage. Strengthening exercises. Neck extension and traction exercises. Rotator cuff exercises. Carpal tunnel exercises. But this is the most awkwardly received homework assignment I hand out… sex.

Some Background…

It’s all about the autonomic nervous system. Wait. First we were talking about sex and now we’re into some boring stuff. What gives? Read on Grasshopper.

It’s auto-NOMIC, not auto-MATIC… even though it often is referred to as the automatic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for controlling all of the automatic functions of the body such as respiration, heart rate and digestion… basically all the things you don’t have to think about.

The autonomic nervous system is divided into two parts… the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic is commonly referred to as the ‘Fight or Flight’ system. This is the part of the nervous system that activates when we are stressed. The parasympathetic nervous system is the ‘Rest and Digest and Heal’ part of the nervous system. This is what kicks in when you are relaxed and enjoying life. This is also what activates when you go to sleep. Sleep is when you heal.

So What?

We spend most of our days in a Fight or Flight mode. Getting stuck in this sympathetic state can cause all sorts of problems. In-fact… this ‘Sympathetic Overload’ is a primary contributor to all disease.

When we are stressed out and overworked we tend to load up on stimulants (coffee, sugar, etc.) and push forward.  This doesn’t help things. This eventually will lead to adrenal burnout.  Your adrenals are your ‘stress hormone’ gland. The adrenals will shut down… and I have seen people who’s adrenals literally would not restart.  In women (primarily) a further concern is burning out the thyroid. Adrenal and Thyroid dysfunction can alter the function of the endocrine system (hormonal), kidneys (excretion and toxin elimination) and even brain function… affects the hypothalamus (internal clock, thermostat and regulator of the body).  Essentially we are talking about how stress can alter (and not for the good) the function of your body and your overall health.

OK, So I’m Overworked and Overstressed. Now What?

The key is to shut off (or ‘turn down’) your sympathetics and turn ON your parasympathetics.  Luckily, your designer provided a few mechanisms to allow you to do this consciously.  Here are three physical things you can actively do to engage your parasympathetics:

1) Belly Breathing.  Breathing is your secret door into the parasympathetic nervous system. Breathing is the ONE bodily function that can be both consciously controlled and also controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Learning how to breath with your diaphragm, rather than with the chest (a sympathetic, stressed breath) will allow you to consciously activate your parasympathetics. This type of breathing is done in yoga, tai chi and certain types of meditation. Even if it is 1 minute, a few times a day, breath into your belly.  By taking conscious control of your breath you will engage your parasympathetics… and shut off the stress.

2) Your Eyes… spend time looking up and to the side.  Sounds strange?  Yes, it is… but the nerve pathway to perform this movement is controlled entirely by the parasympathetic nervous system.  This is a nervous system ‘hack’… This movement will engage your parasympathetics and shut off the stress.

3) Sex.  Here it is. Probably the most effective way to turn on the parasympathetics… often referred to as the ‘after sex response.‘  A little risque advice from your DC but it is 100% true and effective.  Engaging in sexual activity will activate the parasympathetic nervous system, turning off the stress and allowing your body to relax and heal.

My advice to you… SCHEDULE time, multiple times daily to do these activities.  Ten minutes of breathing in the morning can turn your frown upside down.  One minute on the hour of every hour looking up to the side can be a booster shot.   Got it?

Chiropractic

Finally… chiropractic adjustments will stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. I have had patients literally fall asleep on my adjusting table. Why? because they are so stressed (major sympathetic overload)… and when they get adjusted the parasympathetics kick in and they fall asleep. Go get adjusted and practice the tips above for a healthier, happier, less-stressier life!
